For decades I have spoken, written, and sometimes climbed up onto my soapbox about the stubborn idea that humans are the crown of creation—the divine exception, the “higher” species, the only ones with true intelligence, choice, or spiritual awareness.

It is one of the most persistent illusions of our time, and one of the most damaging.

in The Guardian that gave me a breath of genuine hope. Journalist Megan Mayhew Bergman described what she calls the “last frontier of empathy”: seeing ourselves not as superior to animals but as animals too—kin among kin.

2,233 Miles of Healing: Travels with Pico and the Angels

My 11-month-old dog, Pico, and I set out on the longest adventure of his young life so far—driving from Arizona to Nevada and all the way to the Bay Area, north of San Francisco. Over 2,233 miles in ten days, we visited friends, camped in new places, walked among towering redwoods, and breathed deeply of the salt marsh scents along California’s north coast beaches. Grizzly Bear Collaboration

On June 12, 2025, I received an email asking if I could help a wild grizzly bear who swam to Texada island on the coast of British Columbia, Canada. She said island residents didn’t want to coexist and wanted the bear killed, including the government. She wanted the bear to understand that humans were out to kill him. She wanted him to move on to the mainland and out of sight.
